Warehouse Forklift Maintenance
Forklifts need a proper maintenance program to help increase the machine's lifespan and is an important factor in allowing the equipment to function effectively and safely. Completing regular forklift check ups and performing preventive maintenance regularly would help to guarantee the safe and efficient use of the machinery.
Daily Checklist
The daily checklist is an important tool in any forklift maintenance program. These checklists would help to document any and all possible issues. They are required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration or the OSHA. The daily checklists can also be audited by OSHA during any routine inspection. Drivers must complete the inspection from the start of their shift. If any major problems are found, the forklift could not be used until the issue has been fixed.
Maintenance and Safety Go Hand-in-Hand
Each year approximately 100 people are injured in forklift accidents in the United States. Statistics show that roughly 20,000 individuals will be injured seriously because of a forklift mishap. This number represents 54 individuals a day, 7 days a week, for the entire year. Many of these accidents could be easily prevented if the forklift had been properly serviced and maintained. In some circumstances, it may seem like a cost savings to delay or skip regular maintenance, however, these savings would pale in comparison to the cost of a single mishap.
Items to be Serviced
In the owner's handbook of each machine, the manufacturer would include a maintenance schedule. These schedules will differ greatly, depending on the manufacturer and the type of machinery. Each schedule would contain various basic things. Like for example, in a combustion engine, the engine oil and the oil filter should be replaced periodically. Hydraulic levels should be inspected as well. Be certain to check hoses for any signs of cracking. Additional things involve the electrical systems, the brakes and the transmission of the forklift.
