Duties of a Forklift Driver

Forklift drivers typically are employed in warehouses and factories. Their role is to move materials and loads from one place to another. They should be trained to utilized the lift truck controls safely. Specialized training is a prerequisite. Drivers should pass a drug test and have a background check.

Performing Checks

HRSDC and OSHA both require forklift drivers to perform daily and pre-shift checks. Lift truck operator training should comprise the correct performance of safety inspections to assure optimum functionality. An inspection should also be done at the end of every shift. Regular safety training should be undertaken on a yearly basis.

Unloading and Loading

The forklift operator is tasked with the job of unloading and loading supplies in a safe and timely way. This responsibility also involves the stacking of goods in an organized way so they are accessible.

Weighing Materials

Weighing the materials that are to be transported could be part of the forklift driver's duties.

Quality Control

Forklift operators are in charge of quality control. They need to make sure that goods do not sustain damage during transportation inside the warehouse and orders are correct.

Safety Awareness

A responsible lift truck operator must have exceptional skills in awareness and attention to safety. Operators must exhibit a high level of concern for the safety of both employees and pedestrians. The operator must find the safest way to deal with challenges, like navigating a steep surface with a load. The driver should determine the safest route to take. A driver's training would involve learning about the elements which could cause a lift truck to tip over. The driver should be very familiar with the safety ratings and design of the lift truck unit which they are operating. A lift truck driver must be sensitive to the need for breaks to prevent fatigue. Accidents connected to lift trucks are more likely to occur when an operator is tired.
