A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machine which is somewhat similar to a forklift. It allows the operator to use forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain items, and this feature is something the lift truck does not provide. Usually, order pickers are operated by electricity. These equipment are mainly utilized in a warehouse setting. Usually they are utilized for moving pallets and completing specific tasks in the stocking and shelving department.
The operator of an order picker uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting which normally sits fairly near the ground. The operator can direct the machinery to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades can be lifted up to the required level that makes it very convenient for the operator. For example, if the needed materials, are located on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then entire platform could be lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then directed or driven to its next location. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, however, some businesses might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker is also able to put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be utilized to finish these specific jobs at some companies instead.
