Solid Lift Truck Tire Safety

Over 200 deaths each year within North America are caused by forklifts, or lift trucks. Proper inspection and maintenance of forklift tires could truly help to lessen the risk of accidents.

Pre-Work Inspection

The tires on the forklift should be checked at the start of every shift, inspected for signs of wear and damage. The air pressure inside the tires needs to be checked to ensure the pressure is not too low. Having a tire pressure which is low could make the machinery susceptible to tip-overs while lifting loads.

Types of Tires

The selection of tire type should be based on the type of surface wherein the lift truck will be operating. For indoor applications, lift trucks with solid rubber tires are recommended. For smoother surfaces, tires are usually smaller. Larger pneumatic tires are great for lift trucks for outdoor applications. Pneumatic tires could grip well on surfaces which are rough since they have rubber tread and are air-filled.

Other Considerations

Based on OSHA guidelines, all lift trucks need some continual daily and some periodic inspection which is performed every shift. The tires must be checked once more for any indication of damage, like for example cuts or wear.

Forklift Safety

If you or your employees will be using forklifts, correct training in lift truck safety is vital. Forklift mishaps can cause serious personal injuries or death and cause unmanageable financial hardship. Even minor mishaps could cost your business money if the goods or the forklift are damaged during a mishap. Be sure you really know a lot regarding forklift safety problems.
