What Is a Boom Truck?
A boom truck utilizes a winch to recover heavy items or transport supplies to places that are normally not accessible. Like for example, they are usually used maneuvering supplies to a hillside or over a ditch or to reach the top of a building.
A large truck is equipped with a boom winch. This is mounted in the bed of the truck and then it is capable of moving construction things and other equipment from street-side to a particular location. There is a different boom truck design that is equipped with a cherry picker. This model allows arborists to access treetops easily.
The Vehicle
Terex's Stinger BT 3063 model has a reach of 113-feet and is outfitted with both outriggers and stabilizers. A boom truck can vary from an aerial work platform which is moved by a hydraulic lifting mechanism which is mounted on the bed, up to a Class 8 tractor-trailer rig with a bucket. It is also possible to have a customized boom lift manufactured to suit the specific needs of the buyer.
Cherry Picker
Cherry pickers or bucket booms allow employees to reach excellent heights. Usually, cherry pickers or buckets transport workers from the ground up to high areas like the sides of buildings, treetops, up utility poles or for fire department rescue and firefighting.
Location
The boom platform is able to be operated from the truck's cab by remote. Either the boom is mounted on a separate trailer or on the bed of a large truck. Bigger booms need outriggers which horizontally extend from the truck in order to level out and stabilize the crane in its use.
Controls
This type of boom truck has a cab-over-engine which has a control cluster which could move the boom from inside the cab. It is normally a panel in the boom itself on the side of the bed.
