Normally, the operator of this specific kind of forklift stands up in a small cockpit. The stand-up design allows the narrow aisle forklift to be as short and narrow as possible. A stand-up cockpit forklift normally has three tires: one in the back, and two in the front. This configuration allows for fast and easy maneuvering. There are some versions of these forklifts which come with a sit-down cockpit. The lift attachment is capable of pivoting to the sides, permitting the lift to be operated without the operator having to move the entire equipment. The sit-down model generally has four wheels.

Electric-powered machines do not produce exhaust fumes and are not noisy, making them the suitable choice for closed areas like retail spaces. Some lifts come with a diesel engine or a gas engine.
